Pentecost Sunday

Pentecost is the day we commemorate the gift of the Holy Spirit empowering the followers of Christ, fifty days after the resurrection. Many refer to this day as the “birthday of the church.” At Old Bergen Church, Pentecost is a special day of celebration. We will receive new confirmation students as church members. We will also celebrate the sacrament of baptism. Girl Scout Troop #12 (which meets at Old Bergen on Monday nights) will join us on this day.
The worship service will focus on the outpouring of the Holy Spirit “like a mighty wind and tongues of fire” as recorded in the book of Acts. Following that event, according to the New Testament, the people, newly inspired, spilled out of the building where they were worshiping onto the streets outside.
On May 20th we, too, will spill out of the church sanctuary following worship and spill onto the front steps for our fellowship hour. There we will serve empanadas, cookies, juice and water. We will encourage members to offer water and juice (and empanadas!) to people passing by.
Come join us as we celebrate the life of the Spirit at work among us even today at Old Bergen Church as we seek to “Make a Space for Grace” in the heart of Jersey City!
