WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY – OCTOBER 7, 2018
October 7, 2018 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm EDT
As an act of Christian Unity, World Communion Sunday was first celebrated by a Presbyterian church in Pittsburgh, PA in 1933. The pastor of that congregation became moderator of the Presbyterian Church and the occasion was adopted by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (US) in 1936. Other denominations were invited to join in the practice. In 1940 it was adopted by the Federal Council of Churches (predecessor of the National Council of Churches.) Today, World Communion Sunday is celebrated around the world the first Sunday of October, demonstrating that the church founded on Jesus Christ peacefully shares God-given goods in a world increasingly fractured by political and economic forces. On this day, we recognize that we are all one in Christ.
At Old Bergen Church we invite members to bake or purchase a variety of breads from around the world – especially breads that reflect your own cultural traditions. We will present these loaves as part of a processional in preparation for Communion. Join us on October 7th as we celebrate World Communion Sunday.
