Jersey City Together Workshops
There will be two workshops and listening sessions sponsored by Jersey City Together held at Old Bergen this next month. On September 6th from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM the Housing Team will host “Know Your Rights” - an informative workshop on tenant rights led by Rutgers University Law Faculty and the Waterfront Project. Don’t miss this year’s Bergen Square Day festival on Saturday, September 13th, from 12:00 - 6:00 PM. There will be food, venders, exhibits and special performances. The event takes place on Bergen Avenue between Vroom Street and Newark. Old Bergen Church will participate by opening our historic cemetery for walking tours that begin each hour at the Apple Tree House, which is now the Museum of Jersey City History. www.bergensquareday.org

We will celebrate the start of the school year on Sunday, September 14th with Rally Day and “Blessing of the Backpacks”. We will hold a Rally Day gathering in Brett Hall at 9:45 to kick off the Sunday school year with games , stories, music and refreshments. We invite all students (and teachers) to bring their backpacks to church for a blessing of the backpacks as they begin a new school year.

Our Wednesday evening Bible Study classes will resume on September 17th. We meet from 7:00 - 8:00 PM in the church parlor. This fall we will explore “An Odd Couple, Jonah and Ruth; Lessons for our Fractured World.” All are welcome.

World Communion Sunday
Since 1933 the first Sunday of October has been set aside to celebrate our Christian unity and ecumenical partnership with other Christian around the world. We will celebrate World Communion Sunday on October 5th with music and liturgy from our siblings in Christ from around the world. The service will begin with a procession of various styles of bread representing our diverse global identity, and will conclude with the sacrament of Communion. We invite everyone to join us for the Deacons' Autumn Fest on Sunday, October 12th. Following worship we will gather in Brett Fellowship Hall for a luncheon hosted by the Deacons. There are no tickets or price set for the lunch, but donations will be accepted. There will also be balloon creations, a jump castle for the children, a bake sale, cotton candy, popcorn, fall flowers to purchase, and a mini-flea market. Come join us for the fellowship and fun!

We will celebrate our Reformed heritage on Reformation Sunday, October 26th. Our former pastor, Rev. Roland Ratmeyer will be our guest preacher that day. The sanctuary will be adorned with the banners representing the creeds and confessions of our faith and the young people will share the stories of those banners of faith.

All Saints Day Observed – November 2nd
On Sunday, November 2nd, we will remember those saints who have passed from this life into God’s eternal care, yet are still with us in spirit. Members are invited to light a candle and recall the names of loved ones. We will also celebrate Communion. In addition, Chelyse Elaine Manwah, daughter of Chelsea and Jason Manwah, will be baptized on that day.
